More often, it develops gradually through a series of small shifts in authority, interpretation, and tradition. What begins as a simple reinterpretation can eventually reshape how believers understand the gospel itself. This article series explores that process step by step. 1. Deception Begins With Another Voice The first deception recorded in Scripture occurred in the Garden of Eden. God had spoken clearly to Adam concerning the tree in the garden. Yet the serpent introduced a second voice that questioned and reinterpreted what God had said. “Yea, hath God said…?” — Genesis 3:1 The serpent did not immediately deny God’s word. Instead, he offered an alternative explanation. This pattern of introducing another voice beside God’s Word has appeared repeatedly throughout history. 2. When Another Voice Explains Salvation Once a second voice begins interpreting God’s Word, believers may begin to rely on that interpretation rather than the text itself. The explanation becomes the lens through which Scripture is understood. Instead of asking what the Bible says, people begin asking how the system explains the Bible. At that moment, interpretation begins to take on authority. 3. When Truth Feels Like an Attack When deeply held beliefs are questioned, the response is often defensive. This reaction is not unique to religion; it is a common human response known as cognitive dissonance. When information challenges strongly held beliefs, people may feel personally threatened. Instead of examining the question, they defend the belief. The apostle Paul experienced this when he asked the Galatians: “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” — Galatians 4:16 4. How Deception Sustains Itself Once a belief system becomes established, it begins to reinforce itself. Traditions develop. Leaders teach the same interpretations. Communities form around shared explanations. Over time the system becomes familiar and trusted. Because the system feels stable and authoritative, questioning it may appear dangerous or unnecessary. Yet Scripture repeatedly calls believers to examine teachings carefully. 5. When a Second Authority Appears Beside Scripture One of the most critical turning points occurs when another authority begins to stand beside the Word of God. But over time they may begin to function as an authority that determines how Scripture must be understood. 6. When Tradition Speaks Louder Than Scripture As traditions become stronger, they may begin shaping how believers interpret the Bible. Instead of testing tradition by Scripture, believers begin interpreting Scripture through tradition. Jesus warned about this danger when confronting the religious leaders of His day. “Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition.” — Mark 7:13 Scripture may still be quoted, but tradition quietly becomes the controlling voice. 7. When the Gospel Itself Is Altered The final stage of this process is the most serious. If authority shifts far enough away from Scripture, the message of salvation itself can be reshaped. The apostle Paul warned the early church about this danger: “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel.” — Galatians 1:6 The gospel of Christ proclaims the finished work of Jesus as the basis of salvation. But religious systems can gradually introduce additional structures, interpretations, and processes that redefine how salvation is understood. When this occurs, the difference between the gospel of Christ and institutional systems of salvation can become difficult to see. Returning to the Authority of Scripture The purpose of examining these patterns is not to attack individuals or communities. Many sincere believers trust the teachings they have received from respected leaders and traditions. But Scripture consistently calls believers back to one clear foundation. Not the authority of tradition. Not the authority of institutions. Not the authority of human interpretation. The authority of the Word of God. The Bereans were praised for this very reason: “These were more noble… in that they searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” — Acts 17:11 Truth does not fear examination.
