| The Word of God has never been a commodity. It is not a product to be marketed, packaged, or distributed to give authority to doctrine. Scripture stands complete, sufficient, and freely given by God. Yet within Adventist history, a concerning pattern appears—where doctrinal urgency, especially surrounding the Sunday law narrative, is closely connected to the promotion and distribution of specific writings, particularly those of Ellen G. White. This raises a serious question: Is the Sunday law doctrine rooted in Scripture… or sustained through the spread of extra-biblical writings? The Word of God Is Freely Given, Not Sold Isaiah 55:1 (KJV) “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat… without money and without price.” Matthew 10:8 (KJV) “Freely ye have received, freely give.” 2 Corinthians 2:17 (KJV) “For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God…” From beginning to end, God’s truth is given freely. It is never tied to financial exchange or dependent on the distribution of human-authored material. The gospel is not advanced by selling books—it is proclaimed by preaching Christ. Scripture Warns Against Mixing Truth with Gain 1 Timothy 6:5 (KJV) “…men of corrupt minds… supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.” 2 Peter 2:3 (KJV) “And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you…” The Bible warns that spiritual systems can drift into merchandising influence, where truth claims become intertwined with promotion and control. When doctrine becomes tied to distribution campaigns, something has shifted—from truth to system. The Sunday Law Narrative: Absent from Scripture There is no passage in Scripture that teaches: A future global Sunday law Government-enforced worship days as a test of salvation A final judgment based on observance of a specific day John 5:24 (KJV) “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life…” Romans 10:4 (KJV) “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” Galatians 1:8 (KJV) “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel… let him be accursed.” The New Testament is clear: Salvation is not determined by a day—but by faith in Christ. Ellen G. White and the Promotion of Books in Crisis Ellen G. White repeatedly emphasized the importance of circulating her writings—especially The Great Controversy—as a warning message for coming events. Her writings were not merely presented as devotional or historical—they were positioned as essential in preparing people for what was ahead. This creates a critical issue: If a doctrine requires the distribution of a specific author’s writings to be understood or accepted, then it is not grounded in Scripture alone. A Shift from Scripture to System The pattern becomes difficult to ignore: The Sunday law narrative is not found in Scripture It is detailed in Ellen G. White’s writings Its urgency is tied to promoting and distributing those writings The focus subtly shifts: From “What does the Bible say?” To “Have you read the book?” This is no longer sola Scriptura. This is dependence on an external authority. The Gospel Cannot Be Packaged 1 Corinthians 2:2 (KJV) “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Hebrews 1:1–2 (KJV) “God… hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son…” The apostles did not: Build doctrine around visions Tie truth to book distribution Warn of future laws as the basis of salvation They preached one message: Christ alone. The Danger of Book-Driven Doctrine When belief systems rely on promoted writings: Authority shifts away from Scripture Fear replaces assurance Christ is overshadowed by compliance The Sunday law teaching becomes: A message of fear A mechanism of control A distraction from the finished work of Christ Christ Is the Center, Not a Crisis Narrative Colossians 2:16–17 (KJV) “Let no man therefore judge you… in respect of… the sabbath days: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” John 19:30 (KJV) “It is finished.” The final message of Scripture is not: Prepare for a law It is: Rest in Christ The Word of God is not for sale. It is not strengthened by publishing campaigns. It is not clarified by extra writings. The Sunday law narrative reveals something deeper: A doctrine sustained not by Scripture—but by the promotion of a system. The question every believer must face is this: Do I stand on the Word of God alone… or on teachings that require something more?
