| Rescue Ministries — Untangling Biblical Theology The Law of Christ — The Commandments Christians Are Actually Under Why Returning to Sinai Is Not the Path to Holiness One of the most persistent misunderstandings in modern Christianity is the assumption that if believers are not under the law of Sinai… Then they must be living without law altogether. Nothing could be further from the truth. The New Testament never presents the Christian life as lawless. Instead, it reveals a higher, deeper, Spirit-formed obedience anchored in a Person rather than a stone covenant. Paul states it plainly: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2 Did you catch that? Not the law of Moses. The law of Christ. This raises a question many believers have never carefully examined: 👉 What exactly is the law Christians live under today? Because until this is understood, believers will continue oscillating between legalism and confusion. The Transition Many Miss Before ascending, Jesus gave direct commandments to His apostles: “Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen.” — Acts 1:2 Notice the timing. After fulfilling the old covenant… After accomplishing redemption… Jesus gives commandments suited for the New Covenant community. This is not continuity with Sinai. It is covenant transition. Christ does not merely repeat Moses. He speaks with His own authority. Jesus Positioned His Words Above Sinai Perhaps nowhere is this clearer than in the Sermon on the Mount. Repeatedly Jesus declares: “Ye have heard that it was said… but I say unto you.” — Matthew 5 This is breathtaking. He is not correcting Moses. He is revealing the fuller righteousness the law anticipated but could never produce. Consider the escalation: The law said do not murder. Jesus addresses anger. The law said do not commit adultery. Jesus confronts lust. The law regulated retaliation. Jesus commands radical forgiveness. This is not lowered holiness. This is transformed holiness. External compliance gives way to internal renewal. Love — The Governing Principle of Christ’s Law Jesus condensed His command into a single defining mark: “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you.” — John 13:34 Notice the word: New. Not newly emphasized. New in scope. New in depth. New in standard. “As I have loved you.” The benchmark is no longer merely loving your neighbor as yourself… But loving others with the sacrificial love demonstrated at the cross. Sinai could command behavior. Only Christ supplies the model — and the power. Not Under Law — But Not Without Direction Paul makes a statement that dissolves enormous confusion: “For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.” — Galatians 2:19 Dead to the law. Yet fully alive toward God. Later he clarifies: “Being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 9:21 There it is again. Under the law to Christ. Freedom from Sinai is not freedom to sin. It is freedom to live under a greater authority — one that transforms rather than condemns. The Spirit Succeeds Where Stone Could Not The Old Covenant commanded righteousness externally. The New Covenant produces righteousness internally. Paul explains: “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” — Romans 8:4 Notice the language carefully. Fulfilled in us. Not merely demanded from us. The Spirit accomplishes what human striving never could. This is why returning to a stone-based system after receiving the Spirit is spiritual regression. Why Some Still Prefer Sinai Rules feel measurable. Predictable. Controllable. But relationship requires trust. Dependence. Surrender. The law of Christ calls believers into something far richer than behavioral management. It calls us into transformation. This is precisely why Paul warned: “Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?” — Galatians 3:3 Holiness does not mature by abandoning grace. It deepens through it. What the Law of Christ Actually Looks Like The New Testament repeatedly describes the shape of this Spirit-formed obedience: 👉 Love without hypocrisy — Romans 12:9 👉 Forgive as Christ forgave — Colossians 3:13 👉 Walk in humility — Philippians 2:5 👉 Serve one another — Galatians 5:13 👉 Live sacrificially — Ephesians 5:2 Notice the pattern. These are not merely regulations. They are reflections of Christ Himself. The law of Christ is not ultimately a list. It is a life reproduced within the believer. The Danger of Returning to Shadows Paul offers a sobering warning: “Let no man therefore judge you… in respect of… the sabbath days: which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” — Colossians 2:16–17 Shadows are meaningful — but temporary. Once the substance arrives, clinging to the shadow obscures the very reality it pointed toward. Christ is not an enhancement of the old covenant. He is its fulfillment. Obedience That Flows From Union Here is the secret many overlook: Christian obedience does not originate in pressure. It flows from union with Christ. Jesus declared: “Abide in me… for without me ye can do nothing.” — John 15:4–5 Abiding produces fruit. Not anxiety. Not striving. Fruit grows naturally from connection. When believers understand this, obedience stops feeling like a ladder… And starts looking like life. The Higher Standard Few Expect Ironically, those who fear leaving Sinai often assume grace lowers the bar. The opposite is true. The law restrains behavior. The Spirit transforms desires. One regulates conduct. The other reshapes the heart. This is why the New Covenant produces a righteousness the old could never manufacture. Not because the standard changed… But because the power changed. The Question Every Believer Must Answer So ask yourself honestly: 👉 Are you trying to obey God through external pressure… Or internal transformation? 👉 Are you measuring holiness by rules alone… Or by Christlikeness? Because how you answer reveals whether you are living under stone… Or under the Spirit. Final Exhortation — Follow the Living Lawgiver God has not left His people directionless. He has given us something infinitely greater than tablets of stone. He has given us His Son. Do not trade the voice of the Living Lawgiver for the echo of a fulfilled covenant. Stand in the freedom of those led by the Spirit. Walk in the law of Christ. And anchor your life in these unshakable truths: 👉 The law commands love. Christ produces it. 👉 The law regulates behavior. Christ transforms hearts. 👉 The law points forward. Christ fulfills completely. Do not return to what was temporary… When you have been invited into what is eternal. |
