| As humanity multiplied across the earth, Scripture records not only growth in numbers… But a rapid and overwhelming increase in wickedness. “And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth…” — Genesis 6:5 What began in Eden had now spread into every part of human life. Sin was no longer the exception. It had become the condition of the world. Genesis 6 — The Emergence of the Nephilim Genesis 6 introduces one of the most striking moments in early history: “The sons of God saw the daughters of men…” — Genesis 6:2 And then: “There were giants in the earth in those days…” — Genesis 6:4 The Hebrew word Nephilim points to beings described as mighty, renowned, and distinct from ordinary men. This is not presented as normal human development. Something abnormal has entered the human story. Ancient Witness — How the Early World Understood It Ancient sources consistently understood these beings as giants. The Book of Enoch describes powerful beings producing offspring of extraordinary size and strength. The Book of Jubilees echoes this understanding. And the historian Flavius Josephus records that these were: “Men of great stature… exceeding others in strength.” These sources are not Scripture—but they confirm something important: The earliest interpretations did not treat Genesis 6 as symbolic. They understood it as describing real, physical giants. The World Becomes Violent and Corrupt The result is immediate and devastating: “The earth was filled with violence.” — Genesis 6:11 Violence spreads. Moral order collapses. Humanity moves further from God’s design. This is not a slow decline. This is total corruption. A Direct Threat to the Promised Line God had preserved a line through Seth. The promise of Genesis 3:15 still stood—the coming Seed. But now a serious question arises: If corruption reaches “all flesh”… What happens to the promised line? “All flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.” — Genesis 6:12 The threat is global. Many understand this moment as more than moral failure— But an attempt to corrupt or destroy the line through which the Redeemer would come. Debunking Alternate Views — What Does “Sons of God” Mean? This passage has been interpreted in two main ways. Let’s examine them carefully. View 1: The “Sethite Line” Interpretation This view claims: “Sons of God” = descendants of Seth “Daughters of men” = descendants of Cain The issue = intermarriage between godly and ungodly people Why This View Falls Short 1. It does not explain the giants Genesis 6:4 explicitly says: “There were giants in the earth in those days…” Ordinary human marriages do not produce a separate class described as “mighty men of renown.” 2. It ignores the unusual language The phrase “sons of God” is used elsewhere in Scripture for heavenly beings, not human genealogy (e.g., Job 1:6). Nothing in the text suggests Seth’s descendants were called this in a biological sense. 3. It minimizes the severity of the event If this were only intermarriage, why would it lead to: Total corruption of “all flesh” A global flood The near destruction of humanity The scale of judgment suggests something far more serious than mixed marriages. View 2: The Angelic / Supernatural Interpretation This view understands: “Sons of God” = fallen angels Their actions crossed divine boundaries The result = the Nephilim (giants) Why This View Fits the Text 1. It explains the appearance of giants The text directly connects the unions with the emergence of the Nephilim. 2. It aligns with other Scriptures The apostle Peter the Apostle writes: “God spared not the angels that sinned…” — 2 Peter 2:4 And Jude the Apostle says: “The angels… left their own habitation…” — Jude 6 Both passages connect angelic rebellion with judgment—often linked by many scholars to the events surrounding the flood. 3. It explains the severity of judgment A global flood suggests not just moral decline— But a corruption so deep that it threatened the future of humanity itself. What the Text Forces Us to Confront Regardless of interpretation, several facts remain undeniable: The world became completely corrupt Violence filled the earth Giants existed in that period God intervened globally But when all elements are taken together, the text strongly points to: A unique and unprecedented corruption in human history. The War for the Seed Intensifies What began in Eden has now escalated. The promise still stands— But it stands in a world overtaken by corruption, violence, and distortion. The line is under threat. The situation is no longer recoverable by ordinary means. It demands intervention. One Line Still Remains Yet even here— God has not failed. Though corruption spreads across the earth… The line is preserved. His promise still stands. A World on the Brink Genesis 6 presents a world at collapse: Giants walk the earth Violence dominates society Corruption touches all flesh The promise remains— But just barely within a collapsing world.
