Every generation of the church has its own peculiar temptation, and it is rarely the temptation the previous generation faced. The Adventist pioneers battled persecution, poverty, and the scorn of established churches. Their children and grandchildren, by contrast, have inherited universities, hospitals, publishing houses, and a respectable place in the wider Christian world.
This is not, in itself, a tragedy. It is the fruit of real sacrifice and real faith. But every inheritance carries a hidden danger, and the danger of an inheritance is that it can quietly become an idol.
