The World Before the Disappointment
To understand what broke in 1844, you must first understand what was burning before it. America in the 1830s and 1840s was a nation on fire— spiritually, socially, and politically. The Second Great Awakening was reshaping the country from the inside out.
Into this charged atmosphere came a deep and sincere hunger for the return of Jesus Christ. The world felt broken. Slavery convulsed the South. Poverty crowded the cities. Industry was swallowing the pastoral simplicity Americans had come to associate with virtue.
The longing was not wrong. The apostles longed for the same thing. The early church prayed, “Maranatha—come, Lord Jesus.” The desire for Christ to return and set the broken world right is not fanaticism. It is faithful Christianity.
What went wrong was not the longing. What went wrong was the date.
